Privacy Policy

Welcome to, the website of Upstream: Institute for a Healthy Society. Upstream knows that you care how information about you is used and shared. This privacy policy explains what information of yours will be collected by Upstream when you use our online services, how the information will be used, and how you can control the collection, correction and/or deletion of information. We will not use or share your information with anyone except as described in this privacy policy. This privacy policy does not apply to information we collect by other means (including offline) or from other sources.

Information we collect

We do not collect personally identifiable information from individuals through this website unless it is provided voluntarily and knowingly. More on this below.

Most of Upstream resources and publications are available for download free of charge and do not require your personal information to do so.

Any and all personal information you voluntarily provide is protected under the provisions of Canada’s federal privacy legislation.

We do collect non-personal and aggregate information from our site visitors.

We automatically log information about visits to this website in the normal course of establishing and maintaining web connections. Our servers record statistical information such as visitors' IP addresses, time and duration of visit, and web pages visited. If you are signed in, this data is kept as a record of your ongoing relationship with Upstream.

Like most websites, ours uses "cookies" to obtain non-personal information from site visitors (small data files that your web browser places on your computer when you visit a website). Most browsers accept cookies automatically, but can be configured not to accept them or to indicate when a cookie is being sent. That is up to you to set up.

If you sign in to our website using a social media sign-in, such as Twitter or Facebook, we will track that information to better provide you with information that suits your interests. When you perform the sign-in the first time, you will be asked what information you are comfortable sharing with us. Choose according to your comfort level. If you wish to change this access at a later date, you may do so from the social media account.  If you close down the social media account, we will no longer have access to any of the information you have provided, however, we will not delete this information unless you request it.  You may contact us with such a request at any time through our website. You can also manage the information we store and/or use through your account on our website, which is automatically created the first time you log in.

If you choose to provide personal information in order to receive additional communications from Upstream, they will be managed as follows:

Email or Social Media Communications

We value our interactions with you and want to make sure that we share material appropriate to your interests at a frequency that works for you. We use the data we gain through our communications with you to inform this process. We may, in the future, occasionally ask subscribers to consider making a donation to Upstream. If you are uncomfortable with this, please let us know and we will ensure that you cease to receive requests.

We will never share your contact information with a third party. Upstream often partners with organizations to run campaigns that may be of interest to you. If you do sign up for our updates, we may allow our partners to send updates on their campaign through our system. If you reply to these updates, you will be entering into a relationship with the partner who sent the communication and their privacy policies will also be in force. These partner-based communications will be clearly labelled as such.

Online Donors

If you make a donation to Upstream, your email address and credit card information will be handled with extreme confidentiality.

Your security is paramount

Upstream has taken steps to keep all information received from our online visitors as secure as possible against unauthorized access and use. We use an industry-standard database and communications company, Nationbuilder, for storing information and managing electronic communications. You can find more information about this organization at, including their privacy and security information.

For analytics and modelling purposes, your information may occasionally be stored on computers belonging to data analytics companies or professionals. In that case, each organization or person has signed a strict privacy agreement with Upstream that ensures that your data will be used only for the reasons listed above and removed from storage when the analysis is completed.
